Healthy Eating on Holiday

Postby sheffy » Sat Aug 29, 2009 8:35 am

I expect most of us have had our holidays now and wondered if everyone abandons healthy eating on holiday. Every country has its healthy options and it is just a matter of finding them. for instance restaurants selling fish straight from the sea and fantastic fruit straight from the tree (virtually). I just wondered what other people do. I am a big fan of healthy eating - with high cholesterol and high blood pressure I have to be. Even on holiday I eat lots and lots but I do try to eat healthy food. It is so tempting to just give up, though.

I think you need to have a blow out once in a while and being on holiday is just the excuse, just don't over do it is what I would say.

Lol I am so pleased you brought this up. I have holidayed around Europe for 20 odd years and love the fresh salads, fruits, fish and vegetables around the Mediterranean. This year I went to Florida and could not find a decent place to eat! Fried chicken, fried steak, fried cheese, fried everything and..oh, would you like fries with that? The portions are enormous and if you can't finish your meal you are expected to take it home in a box! The sodas or soft drinks are the size of a large drink in McDonalds and everywhere gives free refills. By the time I came home I was craving fresh food and about 10lbs heavier sumo

We went to Florida a few years ago and took my own vitamin tablets. We did eat in some nice seafood restaurants but in general the food was very unhealthy. The Disneyland and other theme parks were just as bad, with the only difference being they charged more.

That could explain lots of the obesity, then!
I just love my food but find it a pity on holiday when you see people insisting on fish and chips etc. when the local food is so nice and so fresh. My downfall, however, is puddings and desserts e.g Italian ice cream, French cakes etc.

I don't think I can remember a holiday where I have really been that bothered about how healthy the food is. Sure I would try and eat some fresh fruit and salads, but other than that I would normally eat what ever I fancied.

You can always eat healthy when you get home again. :chef:

I usually just eat whatever takes my fancy but do find that it is usually quitre healthy! I never seem to have any sweets or chocolate on holiday! Fotr instance in Madeira I had half a cake in ten days!

I lived on mostly beef, chicken and seafood cooked the way they do it over there hehe! Fresh fruit from the markets and loads of salad! Smoothies were also great! Mango Smoothies were my fave out there! Its makes such a different to go somewhere where you only get whats in season and its all fresh! It tastes so much better don't you think?

I quite agree, salina. we went to a little fishing village in Spain last year and ate so much fresh fish and seafood. It was wonderful. also in Turkey this year the food was brilliant. all fresh, all local. Why on earth people want chips and fry ups on holiday is beyond me!

I know its awful isn't it! Surely the point of going abroad is to steer away from what we can get so easily here? McDonalds is another one that gets me! I once went away with a friend and she ate McDonalds practically the whole time we were away! Madness!
