New Super Broadband for Home Users

Thought you might be interested in the following information and interested to hear if you feel this just won't go ahead as planned.

BT's plans to roll out its fibre optic broadband technology to commercial customers. The Conservative party have now vowed to deliver a super-fast broadband network to UK homes by 2017 according to the BBC.

But are they just dangling a carrot prior to the election? They intend to part fund it using the BBC Licence fee. Obviously, Labour have accused the Tories of playing "catch-up" on broadband improvements because the government has already set a target that homes should have access to speeds of 2Mbps by 2012 and the Tories were opposed to the plans to make it happen.

The Tories also plan to end BT's "local loop monopoly" by making changes to the regulatory framework, giving private investors the chance to pay for improved cabling, which is an approach that has paid dividends in other countries.
Thanks

It's always a difficult one with new technology. We just about get the whole country in range of a TV signal and then change to digital, everyone can get a telephone line, then fibre optics come in. I really don't know the best division between public and private money is concerned, although governments (both local and national) have a poor record on IT investment.
As to the specific question, whatever they promise, it will be many years before it gets to Mid Wales whatever they say.

I'm fine, it's all the others!

We were supposed to have super duper hot diggerty dang fast broadband when cable came along. Well that's what Uma Thurman said on the advert.

When we tested ours we got half the speed we were supposed to get. When we complained they said it was due to the distance from the server. Load of old rot I think and they probabaly knew all along it was not possible.

You know the old saying, 'believe half of what you see and nothing of what you are told'.

There certainly is no super fast broadband in my house and I can say an extra 10 meg has made no difference. :esad:
