I think that waiters should be rewarded accordingly to the effort they have put in, what this means, is that there minimum wage should be considered as there salary, that should be the only amount that gets taxed. If indeed the client was satisfied with the food and service, they can freely express there gratitude, by tipping what they feel is appropriate.

Tax on tips are just cheeky, give the waiters a break, and let them embrace what has been given to them, as they do work really hard... what will the government want to tax next... seriously??

I don't think the government wanted to tax tips but they wanted to make it illegal for companies to use tips to bump up the wages of staff! Basically in some places, they would ude the tips as the salary and make up the difference to bring it up to min wage - so effectively the company were taxing these tips!

The government wants to make it illegal for companies to do this, somall employees have to be on at least minimum wage and all the rest is seen as a bonus on top of it all - this way they get to take home better money :P

Due to our recent arrival we used Tesco home delivery service last week for the first time. As it was freezing cold I gave the driver a couple of quid tip. To my surprise he was very reluctant to take it as his boss said they are not allowed because it's now illegal. How stupid has this all got and to think it's my money which has already been taxed.

Really? How mad is that?

Mind you I have been in jobs where we were not allowed to accept cash or gifts before! I once got offered £50 by some man for helping him to translate some documents and getting some legal matters sorted out (A job I had many moons ago) he was so relieved when it all ended he offered me a little gist of £50 and I couldn't take it! I was so gutted!!!!!

On the other hand when I work in the restaurant/bar I got a £50 tip from so dude and had to share it with my colleagues at the end of the night as we pooled our tips! Hehe! It wasn't like he left the tip with the bill! He left £10 with the bill and then he and his wife came to find me at the bar and gave it to me specifically as a Christmas gift (sob sob) LOL!
